Edit › Content-Aware Fill… opens Photoshop's workspace (measured on 25.4)
instead of the generic dialog: a full-window dialog like Liquify's.
- Tools: Sampling Brush (B), Lasso (L), Hand (H), Zoom (Z), each with its
options bar.
- Document view: the sampling area tinted green at 50 % and the fill area's
marching ants.
- Preview panel: the fill computed in the background after each change,
opening framed on the sampling window.
- Content-Aware Fill panel: Sampling Area Overlay (Show, Opacity, Color,
Indicates), Sampling Area Options (Auto, Rectangular, Custom, Sample All
Layers), Fill Settings, Output Settings, and the reset buttons.
- OK, Apply, Cancel.
As Photoshop's:
- The Sampling Brush subtracts in Auto and Rectangular and adds in Custom,
which starts empty; Alt reverses. Its first size is a tenth of the
window's side. Painting keeps the option, and added strokes may lie past
the window.
- The lasso edits the fill area (New, Add, Subtract, Intersect, Expand,
Contract); the window and the Auto area follow.
- Apply fills and stays open; Cancel keeps what was applied. Ctrl+Z undoes
a stroke or an edit. Output opens on New Layer; settings are remembered.
The workspace holds plain data. `edit.contentAwareFill` takes it as
`samplingStrokes`, `fillEdits`, `sampleAllLayers` and `layer`, and both
the preview and OK run one plan (`content_aware_plan`), so the preview is
what gets written. New strings are translated in every catalog.

Photoshop 25.4 was measured as a black box (synthetic and public-domain
images, results read back exactly) and the content-aware family follows it:
- Fill (inpaint): coarse to fine with the coarser level's matches scaled up
and voted with the finer level's own pixels, the coarsest level filled
from the hole's edge inwards, a shallower pyramid. The fill is pieces of
the image copied pixel for pixel with narrow seams, as Photoshop's;
before, it was visibly blurred. Pixels have roles (hole, context,
source, void), so excluded areas stay context instead of being filled.
- Colour adaptation: Image Melding's per-patch gain and bias, limited per
level, instead of a low-frequency membrane pull.
- Sampling window: Photoshop's square of side 4·√(max(w,50)·max(h,50))
centred on the selection, slid inside the canvas; Edit › Fill,
Rectangular, Auto, Delete and Fill and Spot Healing use it.
- Auto sampling area: what looks like the selection's surroundings (local
colour and contrast, one min cut), fitted to Photoshop's overlay.
- Patch Tool: a Content-Aware mode (Structure, Color, Sample All Layers).
- Content-Aware Move: Structure 3..7 alike, a band about a patch wide;
Color as a gain/bias limited to about 0.04 per step.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Edit > Stroke: whole opaque pixels; Center puts the odd pixel inside; canvas edge strokes
Center expanded and contracted the selection by w/2, so odd widths left
half-transparent pixels on both sides (a 1 px stroke was a 2 px band at
half opacity), and a selection edge on the canvas border got no stroke
(Select All, Stroke Inside drew nothing). As in Photoshop, widths round up,
Center puts ceil(w/2) inside and floor(w/2) outside, and the mask is padded
so the canvas border is a selection edge.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Edit > Stroke: a hard-edged selection strokes hard, matching Photoshop's curves
Photoshop's 6 px Outside stroke of a 14 px circle selection made without
anti-aliasing is reproduced exactly when a pixel is stroked whenever its
centre is less than width + 1 from a selected pixel's (our expand gave the
6..7 px fringe partial alpha). For a hard selection the band is hardened;
soft selections keep their soft edges.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Edit > Stroke: the inside of a hard stroke matches Photoshop on curves
Photoshop's 3 px and 5 px Inside strokes of a 14 px hard circle, and its 6 px
one filling the circle, fit one rule: inside, a pixel is stroked when its
centre is less than width + 1/2 from an unselected pixel's (the outside rule
is width + 1). Straight edges are unchanged.

Opening the preset store decoded every imported tip at full resolution, and
each tip then lived twice: in the session's library and in the store's
snapshot of the last sync. A generated 600-brush library (16-bit tips,
800-2000 px, 2.27 GB decoded) cost about 4.5 GB after import and again after
every restart.
Library presets now hold their bitmaps as StoredTile references with a small
saved preview (at most 96 px): photocraft-paint gains TipShape::Stored and
Pattern::Stored (rendered with the full bitmap when loaded, else the preview),
and the store writes each tip's size and preview with its group. Opening the
store reads previews only; once a group is written its presets drop their full
bitmaps. A tip is decoded when its brush is used (picking a preset, a stroke
naming one, exporting) into a 256 MB least-recently-used cache. A loaded stored
tip serialises as `sampled`, so tool presets, actions and brush.get keep the
same JSON. Stores written before this change have no previews: their tips are
decoded once at the next start, eight at a time, and the groups rewritten. A
missing or corrupt tip file is now reported when the brush is used.
Measured with crates/engine/examples/abr_memory.rs on the 600-brush library
from crates/io/examples/gen_abr_library.rs (Windows, release):
after import 4565 -> 38 MB working set, after restart 4551 -> 20 MB,
after using 5 brushes 4560 -> 37 MB; store open 1.47 s -> 0.05 s.

The app still showed the Adobe Photoshop name in several user-visible
strings. Per the product rule (user-facing text says PhotoCraft only),
none of these mention Photoshop now.
UI labels, tooltips and status messages:
- New Document preset "Default Photoshop Size" -> "Default PhotoCraft Size"
- "All shortcuts reset to Photoshop defaults." -> "All shortcuts reset to
PhotoCraft defaults."
- "Import Photoshop brushes (.abr)" -> "Import brushes (.abr)"
- smart-filter fallback name "Photoshop filter" -> "Smart filter"
- File > Save As .psd/.psb filter "Photoshop" -> "PSD Document"
Errors and warnings:
- "this Photoshop filter isn't implemented in PhotoCraft" -> "this smart
filter isn't implemented in PhotoCraft"
- smart_map: "has no PSD equivalent", "not a recognized filter", "its
filter data is missing/unreadable", "this filter has no PSD equivalent"
- tiff_layers: "the PSD layer data...", "the PSD image resources..."
- multichannel: "32-bit Multichannel isn't supported"
- abr: "not a readable brush file (.abr)"
- gradient import: "not a readable gradient file (.grd)"
Translations: updated the changed tl! sources in all 16 catalogs and
dropped the stale "Load Photoshop brushes (.abr)" entries.
Installer / OS metadata: de-branded the nfpm description, the PSB MIME
comment, the AppStream summary/description, the macOS UTType
descriptions, the Windows ProgId Description and the desktop launcher's
Keywords. The Photocraft.PhotoshopDocument ProgId and the
image/vnd.adobe.photoshop MIME/UTType stay: machine identifiers,
changing them hurts file fidelity and Open-with registration.
Command params docs (agent-facing): dropped Photoshop from the
type_cmds kernPair text, the layer_menu_cmds Advanced Blending defaults
and the mask_view_cmds backslash-key text. The "photoshopManages" wire
value stays. Comments, format identifiers and the "photoshop" theme
alias are out of scope and unchanged.
The macOS native-menu shortcut resolution messages no longer say "as in
Photoshop" (Hide/Minimize).
The History panel footer's trash and file-plus buttons discarded their
clicks. They now dispatch two new engine commands:
- history.deleteState {"state"?}: drops the state and every later one,
as Photoshop's linear history does; the document returns to the state
before and the deleted steps can't be redone. The oldest state can't
be deleted (button disabled).
- history.newDocument {"state"?,"name"?}: a new document holding the
document at that state, named after the state, with a fresh history.
Snapshots aren't implemented, so Create new snapshot is shown greyed.

A successful Save As (UI, automation or headless) renames the document to the written file, so its tab and title stop saying Untitled. The name is file identity, not a history step: undo and redo keep it. Failed writes, Save a Copy and exports leave the name, path and dirty state alone, and a deferred save no longer steals the selected tab.

Quick Selection is now one min cut around the brush footprint (Boykov & Jolly 2001; coarse to fine for
large windows, Lombaert et al. 2005), with costs fitted to Photoshop 25.4's masks measured as a black box
on 105 synthetic and public-domain cases (mean IoU 0.94 synthetic, 0.83 paintings), at Photoshop's
512x512 working-resolution rule. Replaces the colour-model flood, which selected far too much.

Large Tabs makes the document tab strip taller (34 px) with larger type; turning off Export Clipboard stops copies being mirrored to the OS clipboard; Show Channels in Color tints the Channels panel thumbnails (RGB from black to the primary, CMYK from white to the ink). Settings that do nothing: 48 of 141 (#204).

Proximity Match copied its translated patch within the buffer it was writing, so overlapping offsets
re-copied fresh output and left streaks. It now reads from the pre-heal pixels, with checked bounds.

Preferences > File Handling > Lowercase Extension is live: with it on (the default) a save path's extension is lowercased (CAT.PSD saves as CAT.psd); off keeps the user's spelling. Settings that do nothing: 51 of 141 (#204).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Preferences > Type > Use Escape to Commit is live: on (the default) Escape commits the type session as before; off, Escape cancels it like the Cancel button, as in Photoshop. Settings that do nothing: 52 of 141 (#204).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Preferences > Type > Fill new type layers with placeholder text is live: with it off, a Type tool click starts an empty layer (removed again if committed without typing). Settings that do nothing: 53 of 141 (#204).

The embedded document built by layer_to_smart now carries the document's patterns, so pattern fills
and pattern effects keep rendering inside the smart object and after Edit Contents. Fixes#1867.

The refusal message Debug-quotes the path, which doubles backslashes on Windows, so
contains(path) never matched there. Matching the unique file name keeps the check.

View > Print Size divides the document's ppi into Preferences > Units & Rulers > Screen Resolution (72 ppi by default) instead of a hard-coded 72, and the setting is no longer hidden. Settings that do nothing: 54 of 141 (#204).

A percentage grid now spaces vertical lines by the document width and horizontal lines by its height,
so rectangular canvases get proportional cells, and grid snapping uses the same per-axis steps.

New Fill Layer (Solid Color, Gradient), the Gradient tool's live fill layers, gradient fill edits and Gradients panel presets store their colours in the document's mode (Color::in_mode / Fill::in_mode), so a fill layer in a Grayscale, CMYK or Lab document composites like the same colour painted with Edit › Fill, as Image › Mode already converted them. Fixes#1905; tests at 8, 16 and 32 bits.

file.export.colorLookupTables takes scope all|selected or an explicit layers list and bakes only those top-level, visible adjustment layers, always in document stacking order; the dialog defaults to the selection when it is all exportable adjustments. Invalid selections and sizes are errors rather than silent fallbacks; LUT sizes outside 2-129 (the reader's limit) are now refused instead of clamped.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Fixes#1833. Control and MCP may run Edit Contents, Convert to Layers and Save Contents on smart objects whose source is in memory (embedded, or a Photoshop UUID backed by embedded liFD data). Before any disk read the engine re-checks the source's stored path through the session's authorize gate, including nested sources re-rendered while unpacking, so external linked files stay refused; explicit layer targets work with another layer selected, and interactive linked-file access is unchanged.

The style menu now shows each face's actual OpenType subfamily (name 17, else 2) instead of a name guessed from its weight, so fonts whose faces share one weight (Yoon's numeric 20/30/40/50) list and render distinct faces: FontDb::select_named_face registers a runtime-only alias for the exact face, while the document keeps its public family and PostScript name. Variable faces still list the standard weights their wght axis covers.

Save for Web gets a platform-writer entry point (web_cmds::save_for_web_with_writer) so the browser build downloads every image, spacer and HTML file side by side; the export is authorized before any picker opens, a failed write stops it, and only a complete export remembers its settings. Each document now opens the dialog at its own size instead of the last export's width, height and percent.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
In the desktop app every filter's live preview now runs on the preview worker (not just Indexed Color), so a slow one like Gaussian Blur at 1000 px no longer freezes the window. The worker hands the filter a JobCtx (Session::set_inline_job_ctx) and cancels a preview for older values once the dialog's values have been unchanged for 150 ms; during a drag the running preview is left to finish.

Photoshop's Vertical, Horizontal, Dual Axis and Diagonal paint symmetry presets beside the
path-based symmetry: axes start at the document centre, Transform Symmetry moves and rotates
them (Shift snaps to 15°, Enter applies, Esc cancels), and all copies merge into one coverage
pass so overlaps don't build opacity. New paint.setSymmetry command and preset icons. Fixes#1648.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The document tab's context menu gains Reveal in Finder (a new file.revealInFinder command that reuses the smart-object reveal helper and targets the clicked tab's document), and dragging a tab sideways reorders the open documents through document.move, with a drop line, in both tab strips. Flips UI-217-6 to done.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Outside the crop frame the pointer is Photoshop's curved turn cursor and a drag turns the frame
about its centre (Shift: 15 degree steps) with an angle readout; handles resize along the turned
axes and a double-click inside commits. image.crop takes an optional angle: Image Rotation >
Arbitrary so the frame is upright, then the crop, in one undo step. Fixes#1792.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Edit > Stroke… from the menus opens a Photoshop-style dialog (Width, Color, Location, Blending:
Mode, Opacity, Preserve Transparency) remembering its last values; called with params it runs
directly. edit.stroke gains mode and preserveTransparency, blending through Fill's compositing
(blend_color_mask), and validates them. The Blending section is shared with Fill
(dialog_blend_ui.rs). Fixes#1463.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Unknown keys, wrong types, out-of-range sizes or resolution and unsupported
mode/depth/background now fail naming the parameter, before a floating selection is
committed or a document added; omitted fields keep their defaults. The renderer tests
now pass numeric depths (strings had silently fallen back to 8-bit). Part of #507.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A host lists fonts in fonts/manifest.txt beside index.html (craft-fonts' manifest format, paths
kept inside the site); the web shell lists those families in the font menus and fetches a family
when it is picked or a layout needs it, then re-renders the affected type layers without a history
step. No manifest changes nothing; package.sh copies one in with PHOTOCRAFT_WEB_FONTS_DIR. The
style menu also lists the weights of a variable font's wght axis.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
adjust_surface now takes the layer's tiles and adjusts each one on its own rayon task, so a large layer needs one tile's buffers per thread instead of four full-layer copies. The result is bit-identical to the single pass for every adjustment kind, colour model and depth, with and without a soft selection (tiled_adjustment_matches_one_pass_over_the_content). Adds an invert scenario to large_image_bench.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Applying a comp after ordinary edits now backs up the edited layout instead of keeping
a stale one; cycling or reapplying unedited comps keeps the original backup. The check
runs only on comp application and respects each comp's capture flags. Fixes#919.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Session::edit now reports empty damage when the step leaves every layer's pixels and the
document's compositing fields untouched (same_pixels: a bounded walk over the layer tree
comparing tiles by pointer), so a selection change no longer recomposites the whole canvas.
Adds a lasso_bench example. Fixes#1773.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
step_damage pairs layers by id and steps over a layer only one side has when it draws nothing
(an empty pixel layer or group in Normal/Pass Through, no masks, effects or Advanced Blending,
not a clipping base), so New Layer, New Group and their undo/redo report no damage. Adds the
P51 perf scenario (new layer in the 150-layer document). Fixes#1771.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
As in Photoshop, a new adjustment or fill layer with no selection or active path gets
an enabled, linked reveal-all mask (sparse, no canvas-sized allocation), ready to paint,
in the layer's single undo step. Fixes#1768.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
New command layer.toggleMaskOverlay, bound to \ as in Photoshop: shows the active layer's
mask as a 50% red rubylith over the composite and hides it again (view state, not a history
step; the mask stays the paint target). Disabled without a layer mask; a focused text field
keeps the key. Fixes#1765.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Layer > Rasterize > Vector Mask multiplied the hard vector mask into the pixel mask, dropping
the vector mask's feather (and the pixel mask's feather or density). When any of those shape
the edge, the pixel mask now becomes exactly the combined mask the compositor showed, with
feather and density baked in. Tested at 8, 16 and 32 bits against the composite. Fixes#992.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Edit > Define Pattern… now opens a Pattern Name dialog, prefilled with the name the pattern would get anyway (pattern_cmds::default_name, now shared with the command so the two can't drift), as Photoshop does.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
image.imageSize returns the document's size after the command instead of the requested
one, so Resample off (which changes the resolution only) no longer reports a size it
ignored. Tested at 8, 16 and 32 bits. Fixes#1815.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Edit › Preferences › General takes ⌘K and Edit › Search moves to ⌘F, as in Photoshop. Nothing
else was bound to ⌘F (Filter › Last Filter stays ⌘⌥F); the shortcut-capture tests follow.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
HalftoneShape::from_id returns None for an unlisted id instead of silently falling
back to Round, and the command fails naming the valid shapes (part of #507).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A cfg(test)-only test.panic command drives Session::execute into the catch_unwind
guard in jobs::dispatch; the test asserts an internal-error Err, an untouched document
and history, and a working session afterwards. REL-3 flips to done.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
document.inspect (and photocraft-cli info) now gives every smart object a
smartSource: embedded with its file name, or linked with a file path or,
for a PSD placed layer, the Idnt uuid its duplicates share. A script can
then tell duplicates of one placed file from independent contents, e.g.
to check that every location in a mockup template has its own art.

A camera JPEG (e.g. Nikon D3200) records its resolution only in EXIF IFD0, so it
opened at 72 ppi instead of 300, and saving wrote JFIF 72 next to the source's
EXIF 300.
Reading: a JPEG takes the first usable of APP13 Photoshop ResolutionInfo
(0x03ED), XMP tiff:X/YResolution, EXIF IFD0 X/YResolution + ResolutionUnit
(2 inch, also when absent; 3 cm), and only then the JFIF density. That is the
order Photoshop resolves them in; JFIF comes last because cameras write EXIF
only while many tools write a default JFIF 72. Other formats (WebP, HEIF, PNG
without pHYs, ...) fall back to XMP then EXIF when they have no resolution of
their own. All parsing is bounds-checked; malformed data reads as no
resolution.
Writing: JPEG, PNG, WebP, TIFF (XMP), PSD and Save for Web JPEG rewrite the
EXIF/XMP resolution to the image's: RATIONAL values in place, ResolutionUnit 2,
and an entry that can't be rewritten safely is removed from IFD0 without moving
any other data.
Indexed Color accepted fractional colour counts and computed its live preview on the UI thread.
Counts are now whole numbers in 2-256 with a linear slider snapping at 8/16/32/64/128/256, and on
native builds the preview runs on one background worker that coalesces slider drags and rejects
stale results. Nearest-colour lookup uses an exact kd-tree above 64 entries (identical indices,
256 colours at 4.2 MP: 3018 -> 1061 ms). Web and inline sessions stay synchronous.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A new filter that removes a chosen colour by unmixing it into transparency, as GIMP's and
Krita's Color to Alpha do: per pixel the most transparent opacity that keeps the unmixed colour
in range, shaped by transparency and opacity thresholds. It runs through run_filter (selection,
smart filters, Last Filter, one history step), floats the Background first and refuses a
transparency-locked layer; the filter dialog gains a colour parameter. Fixes#1576.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The combined-mask cache was capped only at 64 entries, so large feathered masks could retain a
lot of memory, and Edit > Purge > All left them allocated. The cache is now also bounded to
512 MiB of accounted pixel bytes (result plus the pinned input), Purge All clears it and reports
its bytes, and a purge generation stops a build that started earlier from refilling the cache.
