Resolutions: CLI usage, flag lists and flag parsing carry both --tiff-compression (t15) and
--jpeg-format (t16); file.saveACopy, batch, imageProcessor and layersToFiles param specs carry
both tiffCompression and jpegFormat; file_cmds keeps tiff_compression_param and
jpeg_format_param; atn_cmds keeps flag_set/applies_at_canvas_bounds (t15) and UNHOLDABLE (t16),
edit.transform uses the pixel_target guard (t15) with layer_ref(p)? (t16); ui-egui open paths
build ImportOptions (t16) and apply raw_defaults (t15); docs headers/rows unioned; atn tests keep
both sides; tr.tsv "Keep Using CPU" kept once.
crates/engine/src/file_cmds/tests.rs: both sides' appended tests kept whole.
docs/file-format-parity.md: header line keeps ours plus the PR's change item, date 2026-10-18; TIFF row has both notes; change-log rows kept both, newest first.
Conflicts only in the parity docs: status lines take main's text with the
JPEG Options entry (FILE-215-19) on top; scorecard takes main's rows with
FILE-215-19 done and File compatibility 10 / 12 / 5.

Main added DDS saving (#5993): DDS Options, and FormatChoices carrying the
Targa and DDS answers through every save path (this branch's SaveChoices
carried Targa and JPEG). Resolved by keeping main's name and making it
the one struct for all three answers.
- lib.rs: FormatChoices { tga_bits, dds, jpeg } with from_params (strict),
from_step (lenient JPEG read of a recorded step), apply and record;
main's separate block is folded in. Both prompts (dds_options and
jpeg_options) are kept everywhere: save_to asks Targa, then DDS, then
JPEG Options; save_options_open covers all four. save_in_place takes
main's (path, choices) signature and records the plain-Save step with
plain_save_step for JPEG plus the Targa/DDS answers (save_in_place_with
folded into it). journal_as_plain_save relabels a parked Targa, DDS or
JPEG prompt and keeps tgaBits/dds*/quality/jpegFormat when dropping the
path. replay_save reads choices with from_step.
- SAVE_OPTIONS_OPEN names all four prompts; DDS Options uses it too.
- targa_options_ui: main's plain-Save step (no path) through this
branch's write_answered_save. JPEG Options gets main's Enter-on-a-
focused-Cancel fix.
- view_cmds Save a Copy asks Targa, DDS, then JPEG Options; write_copy
takes FormatChoices.
- control.rs: both app.save tests (JPEG and DDS) kept.
- engine file_cmds: SaveOpts keeps jpeg_format and dds; param docs list
both jpegFormat and ddsCompression/ddsMipmaps. CLI: both --jpeg-format
and --dds-compression/--dds-mipmaps. codecs re-exports JpegFormat and
DdsCompression/DdsOptions.
- docs/book: both entries kept (control-protocol app.save lists both).

DDS textures can now be saved, not just opened: uncompressed (BGRA, BGRX, L8, A8L8; lossless) or BC1/BC2/BC3 (DXT1/3/5) from a clean-room block encoder, with an optional box-filtered mip chain, in the legacy header. Save As and Save a Copy ask with DDS Options; scripts pass `ddsCompression`/`ddsMipmaps` (file commands, control `app.save`, RPC `doc.save`, MCP `doc_save`/`doc_export`), and the CLI takes `--dds-compression`/`--dds-mipmaps`. Targa and DDS answers travel together as `FormatChoices` through the Save As flow.
Review follow-ups:
- File › Save behind DDS or Targa Options records a plain Save with its answer, and replaying `file.save` applies it (#3531).
- The block encoder finds the principal axis from every channel, so a channel that varies on its own can't hide the others' variation.
- DDS joins the shared round-trip suite; the header is built before the output buffer is allocated.
- Enter on a focused Cancel in DDS, Targa or TIFF Options cancels instead of saving.
Save As and Save a Copy to a JPEG now ask for JPEG Options before writing,
as Photoshop does. Re-creates #4330 on current main and folds in the
unique parts of #5580 (#5563).
- codecs: `JpegFormat` (Baseline, Optimized, Progressive) on
`EncodeOptions`. Progressive writes SOF2. Baseline Optimized fits the
Huffman tables only at 4:4:4 (Gray, CMYK) or with Progressive: fitted
tables make the baseline scans non-interleaved, which zune-jpeg 0.5.15
decodes wrongly with 4:2:0 chroma (zune-image#419), as Save for Web
already works around.
- engine: a `jpegFormat` save param (file.saveACopy, Batch, Image
Processor, Layers to Files and every SaveOpts user; anything but the
three names is BadParams before writing) and a shared 0–12 -> 1–100
`jpeg_quality()` that maps NaN/inf to 100.
- ui-egui: `jpeg_options_ui` (Quality 0–12 with Low/Medium/High/Maximum
presets, Format Options), parked like Targa Options. It starts at the
opened JPEG's own quality (`file_encoding`, #4032), else the Export
preference; left there, OK writes that quality exactly and the step
records no `quality`. `SaveChoices` (Targa bits + JPEG) replaces the
bare `tga_bits` through file.save / file.saveAs / app.save, replay and
Save a Copy; automation never prompts. `write_answered_save` is shared
with Targa Options. `park_at` + `Start` let any save seed the prompt.
A File › Save that confirms the document's own flat JPEG is still
journalled as a plain `file.save` (#3531).
- CLI: `--jpeg-format`.
- i18n: five new strings in all 20 catalogs (#4330's duplicate de/es/zh
`Low`/`High` rows dropped: main has them since #4008).
- Docs: book raster-formats JPEG bullet, control protocol, file-format
parity, gaps G10, target-app parity; scorecard FILE-215-19 done.

The paths are compared before the save reopens the output, so a link swapped in meanwhile
is not caught (CodeRabbit nitpick on #7455).

`photocraft-cli convert in.jpg in.jpg` re-encoded the original in place and
exited 0, so one wrong output template destroyed the source (a lossy JPEG
re-encode can't be undone). `batch` already refuses an --out folder that is
its --in folder (#492); convert now applies the same rule: an <out> that is
the <in> file, however it is spelt (./, absolute, hard or symbolic link), is
refused before anything is read, and --in-place opts in.

* feat(commands): find the Elliptical Marquee by 'ellipse' or 'marquee' (#5060)
The Elliptical and Single Row/Column Marquee are options of select.rect
("ellipse":true, "line"), but the command-list filters only looked at
the id and the label ("Rectangular Selection"), so 'ellipse' and
'marquee' found nothing.
Commands can now carry search keywords. command.list / engine.commands
rows include them as "keywords", and the three filters (CLI commands
--filter, the engine.commands RPC and the MCP command_list) share one
matcher over id, label and keywords. select.rect gets the Photoshop
marquee names as keywords.
* Command list replies: document the optional keywords key
The reply-shape test from #3684 pins the exact keys of each row; select.rect
now also carries keywords, so the test and docs/control-protocol.md allow
that one optional string.
Photoshop writes a document's alpha channel as an unspecified extra sample (ExtraSamples 0). The decoder dropped it, so such a TIFF opened without its channel and a save never wrote one. With no extra sample marked as transparency, the first unspecified one is now decoded as the alpha and flagged as an alpha channel (Metadata::alpha_is_channel): flat TIFFs open it as a named alpha channel over an opaque Background, layered ones through their Photoshop channel names. Saving writes the first alpha channel as an unspecified extra sample when the document has no transparency (flat and layered), naming the channels it leaves out; extra samples beyond the alpha are dropped with a warning. Saves also take tiffCompression (none, lzw, zip) and the CLI --tiff-compression. Fixes#5301.

* Brush: remember the last selected brush across restarts (split from #2516)
The persistence half of #2516 on its own, so it can merge and be maintained
apart from the brush-outline half. The tool's brush (settings, tip
references, and the name of the preset it was picked from) is saved once the
pointer is up and restored at launch: options bar, painting cursor and
Brushes panel highlight all start where the session left off.
Review fix from #2516 -- no per-frame work:
- `ToolState::brush_rev` is bumped by every brush/preset setter
(`tools.setBrush`, preset save/delete/rename/setCurrent/deleteGroup,
`brush.defineFromSelection`, `brush.presets.importAbr`, the store's tip
re-linking, and the shell's tool-switch/reset paths); `remember_brush`
serialises only when it moved since `brush_saved_rev`, so an unchanged
brush costs a counter compare per frame, not a clone and a JSON dump of
the whole brush (sampled tip previews included).
- Restoring counts as saved: the launch value is never rewritten.
Bitmaps stay out of the preferences document: remembered tips and patterns
are references (a loaded stored tile drops its full bitmap), and a sampled
bitmap too big to embed is skipped, keeping the previous value so a preview
never enters the prefs file. A malformed remembered brush falls back to the
default.
docs/scorecard.md regenerated with `cargo xtask scorecard` (34 of 154).
Tests: engine 1267 lib (5 new: revision gating, rejected changes, picked
preset, restore round trip, no embedded bitmaps), ui-egui 1982 lib; clippy,
layers, wasm green.
* rustfmt the StoredTile line and regenerate the scorecard after the main merge
* engine tests: destructive Levels keep the signed float overshoot at 32 bits (#2592)
* Scorecard: regenerate after merging upstream/main
* Export As: compare batch paths without the Windows separator

Read SMPTE 268M DPX in both byte orders (SDPX, XPDS): the first image
element, descriptor 6 (luma), 50 (RGB) or 51 (RGBA), at 8, 10, 12 or 16
bits, with 10-bit packing 0, 1 (method A) or 2 (method B) and 12-bit
packing 0 or 1. 10- and 12-bit code values open as U16
round(c * 65535 / (2^b - 1)) and come back exactly when written at their
depth. No colour transform: the transfer characteristic and colorimetric
specification are reported as import notes; extra image elements are
reported; the orientation is applied on import.
Write big-endian, one unencoded element, at 8, 10, 12 or 16 bits
(EncodeOptions::dpx_bits; `dpxBits` on the save commands, MCP and RPC;
`--dpx-bits` in the CLI), following the document depth by default. Gray
with alpha is written as luma. Creator, project, copyright, creation
time, transfer, colorimetric, frame position, frame rate and time code
travel as DPX:* text metadata and are written back.
Unsupported descriptors, signed or run-length-encoded data and other bit
depths return CodecError::Unsupported; malformed and truncated files
return errors.

* Load and save Photoshop Actions (.atn) (#219)
- photocraft-psd: `atn` parser and writer for version-16 action sets, exact round trip,
truncation/garbage safe, fuzz target and `atn_dump` example. Descriptor fix: `indx` and
`Idnt` reference items carry a class before the number (real action files failed to parse).
- photocraft-engine: `atn_cmds` maps 92 Photoshop events to commands and back (filters,
adjustments per channel, image/canvas/crop/trim/rotate/flip/mode, make/set/select/delete/
hide/show/move/duplicate, fill/stroke, selection, clipboard, purge, profiles, play, stop).
Other steps load as `actions.photoshopStep` (descriptor kept, written back by save, fails at
playback by name); tool selections load switched off. Commands `actions.load`,
`actions.save`, `actions.stopMessage`, `actions.photoshopStep`. `Action` gains `dialogs`
and `set`. `layer` params accept a layer name, so loaded steps replay in any document.
- UI: Actions panel menu › Load Actions… / Save Actions…; Photoshop steps labelled.
- CLI: `batch --actions set.atn`. Automation policy covers the new path params.
- Docs: file-format parity (.atn R/W), gaps G11, target-app parity, scorecard AUTO-219-2
partial, development guide.
* Translate the Actions panel's Load/Save strings in every catalog
The eight new panel strings (Load/Save Actions…, the loaded/saved counts, the kept-step label)
were missing from all 19 catalogs; the languages that were complete are back at 100%.
* Show the Actions entries in the default dock's panel menu
The legacy dock renders its own group menu and only knew the Layers and Swatches entries, so
Load Actions… and Save Actions… were missing there.
* test(ui-egui): Export As artboards test accepts the Windows path separator
The test added in #3909 compared the second file's path with a literal
'/', but the exporter joins the sibling name with the platform separator,
so Windows CI saw '/out\boards-2-Capsule.jpg' and failed.

* build(web): opt-level z for large cold crates in the wasm release profile
The browser wasm sat at the 24 MiB gate. The document model, file
parsers (psd, format, affinity), serde_json, usvg and naga are off the
per-frame and per-pixel paths; opt-level "z" for them takes the
release wasm from 25,186,233 to 24,829,840 bytes (-356 KB) with no
behaviour change.

* fix(cli): run prints each missing-font warning once
Since #3630 the headless open and save also report missing fonts, so
`run <file> --out` and `run --cmd ... --out` printed the same warning
two or three times and missing_typeface_is_reported_by_run_info_and_convert
failed on main. Warnings from the open and the save now go through the
same already-reported set as the per-command ones.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(ui): the filter preview window never uploads a texture past the GPU limit
With low-resolution previews off, the preview window from #3877 uploaded
the whole document as one texture. egui panics on a texture bigger than
max_texture_side, so opening a filter dialog on a large image crashed
(full_res_preview::filter_dialog_previews_at_full_resolution_when_low_res_is_off).
The texture is now reduced to fit; the view maps through UV fractions,
so it still lines up.

* automation: doc.place reads a file through the read root (#2810)
file.placeEmbedded takes an ambient path, so automation refuses it and an
agent could not place a file into the open document at all. doc.place
resolves the path beneath the read root the way doc.open does and hands the
bytes it already read to the public file_cmds::place_bytes, so the existing
cap-std rules stay the only path rules: no new scope logic, and the ambient
command keeps its refusal. Trusted-local callers still run the command.
* automation: export layers, data sets and CSVs through the roots (#3216)
file.export.layersToFiles and file.export.dataSetsAsFiles take an ambient
dir, file.import.variableDataSets an ambient path, so all three are refused
in automation even for files inside the granted roots, and an agent could
not export a single file or a data set at all.
Both halves already existed: the engine writes bytes it has just encoded
(save_doc is encode + write_file, and the data-set exporter encodes with
photocraft_io::export before writing), and the automation side already
holds a write capability — AuthorizedWorkspace::export_sequence creates the
directory, refuses to overwrite, accepts only single-component names and
removes every file it created when a step fails, which is what Render Video
uses. So each command body moves behind the same sink callback
render_video_with takes: the command keeps writing the bytes it is handed
to its dir, the new methods write the very same bytes through the root, and
the two implementations cannot drift.

`batch --actions` ran each file in a fresh headless session with no
actions, so a step that plays another action (`actions.play`) failed for
every file, and the Actions panel's own actions.json could not be passed
at all. `--actions` now also takes an Actions set; `--action <name>`
picks the action to play and every per-file session gets the whole set.
A failed step inside a called action fails the file instead of saving it.

Squashed onto main, with the maintainer's asks applied:
- Photoshop's blend menus (layers, brush, pencil, gradient, layer style) stay as they are;
the Layers panel and Blending Options list a Paint.NET mode only for a layer that uses one.
- The six Paint.NET mode labels are translated in every catalog, and the blend-mode i18n test
iterates layer_modes().
- pdn::pixels rejects truncated uncompressed (version 1) data before allocating its buffer.

Conflicts: File › Open and batch extension lists (SVG, swatches and
Affinity together); the import dispatcher (upstream's type-layer

corpora side by side; README, book and development docs.
Affinity type layers now draw through text_import::prepare, so they get
the same raster bound as other imported type, and SVG import fills the
two new ImportResult fields.

* fix(apps): a non-Unicode argument is a usage error, not a startup panic (#1108)
Both binaries read `std::env::args()`, which panics on an argument that is
not valid Unicode: `photocraft-cli info $'caf\xe9.png'` died in
`library/std/src/env.rs` before printing anything, and a file manager
handing the desktop app a Latin-1 file name would do the same before any
window opened.
CLI: `photocraft_cli::run_os` takes the raw `OsString`s, and an argument
that does not convert is a usage error naming its position and a lossy
rendering (exit 2, with the usage text), like any other bad argument.
`main` calls it; `run(&[String])` is unchanged for in-process callers.
Desktop: the loop matches on `OsStr::to_str`. Flag values that are paths
(`--control-token-file`, `--automation-*-root`) become `PathBuf`s directly
and so keep working with any name; a non-Unicode `--control-token` is a
control-argument error like a bad `--control` port; non-Unicode file
arguments are collected and reported in a "Could not open" notice once the
app is up, so the launch still succeeds.
Test: `a_non_unicode_argument_is_a_usage_error_not_a_panic` (unix) runs
the binary with a `caf\xe9.png` argument for `info` and `convert` and
asserts exit 2, the message, and no panic output.

* Lossy WebP: a pure-Rust VP8 encoder with quality and lossless controls (#648)
crates/codecs gains codecs/vp8: a clean-room VP8 key-frame encoder from RFC 6386
(boolean coder, 16x16 and 4x4 intra prediction with per-macroblock mode decision,
forward DCT/WHT paired with the bit-exact inverse transforms, dc/ac quantiser tables,
token coding with per-frame probability updates, skipped macroblocks). webp.rs wraps
the frame in the RIFF container (bare VP8, or VP8X with ALPH alpha and ICCP/EXIF/XMP).
EncodeOptions: webp_lossless now picks the encoder instead of erroring, webp_quality
(0-100) sets the quantiser; a lossy WebP reports a LossyCompression fidelity warning.
Export As: the WebP entry gets Quality and a Lossless switch (new tl! string in all
catalogs). CLI --quality, MCP/RPC doc_save quality and the engine's JPEG-style
quality turn a WebP lossy; without a quality WebP stays lossless as before.
Tests: tests/webp_lossy.rs decodes every file with image-webp (PSNR by quality,
sizes fall with quality and are >= 4x below lossless on noisy photos, flat frames
under 1.2 KB, alpha exact, metadata round trip, odd/tiny sizes, 16-bit input, the
16383 px limit as an error, text edges), plus unit tests for the coder, transforms,
prediction and header.

Maintainer decision on #672: the app's Save As keeps TIFF layers as Photoshop does (it sets
ExportOptions.tiff_layers from its Layers option), but scripted and agent saves stay flat by
default so conversions keep predictable sizes. #672 merged with the default on, so every
headless TIFF save became layered.
- photocraft-io: ExportOptions::default() has tiff_layers: false. The desktop and web Save As
already set it explicitly from their settings, so the app is unchanged.
- photocraft-cli: --tiff-layers on convert, run and batch (listed in the usage text).
- engine: file.saveACopy, Batch, Image Processor, the export-to-files commands and the lens
batch take "tiffLayers": bool=false, through one SaveOpts { quality, tiff_layers }.
- automation: serve doc.save and MCP doc_save take tiffLayers (default false).
- Tests: default ExportOptions write a flat TIFF; the CLI writes flat without the flag and
layered with it (run and convert); #672's layered-TIFF tests ask for layers explicitly.

* Command params that are not a JSON object are an error (#506)
`Session::dispatch` now rejects array, string, number and boolean params
with "invalid parameters for `<id>`: params must be a JSON object" instead
of running the command with every default; `null` still means no params.
The one check covers the control channel, `serve`, MCP (headless and
bridge) and the CLI, and batch steps fail per step. `photocraft-cli run
--new` prefixes its error with `--new`.

* Headless requests apply finished background jobs first (#503)
A `wait: false` job was applied to its document only by a later command
or `jobs.list`, so `doc.save`, export, `doc.inspect`, `doc.render` and
`session.list` (and their MCP tools) still read and wrote the document
without it. `Headless::sync_jobs` now runs at the top of every JSON-lines
request and before every headless MCP tool call.

* `serve` stdio keeps the session after a rejected request line (#505)
An over-long request line (or one that is not UTF-8) ended the stdio
session, losing every open document. It now gets one error reply, the
rest of that line is skipped without being dispatched, and the next
request is served. `read_bounded_line` reads bytes, so a cut inside a
multi-byte character is reported as too long instead of an I/O error.
TCP connections still close after an oversized line.

* MCP `command_batch` keeps its step results when the reply budget stops it (#504)
The batch budget charged each step's plain JSON size, but MCP sends the
batch reply as escaped text content, so a batch the budget had already
stopped could still exceed the tool-result ceiling and come back as a
bare "response exceeds" error. MCP (headless and bridge) now uses
`BatchReplyBudget::escaped`, which charges the escaped size, through the
new `Headless::batch_with_budget`; `serve` keeps the plain budget.

* docs: the 1 MiB request-line limit does not apply to MCP stdio (#529)
The book stated the 1 MiB request-line limit without naming a transport.
It applies to desktop and headless TCP and to the headless JSON-lines
stdio server; MCP over stdio reads its own lines and only its tool
results are size-checked. Say so in the automation security pages and in
the control protocol's transport limits.

* CLI --quality refuses every value outside 1-100 (#491)
--quality was parsed as a u8 and clamped, so 0 and 101-255 were silently
accepted while 256 and above were rejected. Every value outside 1-100 is now
a bad --quality error, checked before any file is read or written.

* CLI batch: --format with a leading dot names outputs <stem>.<ext> (#490)
batch built output names from the raw --format value, so --format .jpg wrote
a..jpg. One leading dot is now dropped, as the save path and
file.automate.batch already do.

* CLI batch --actions takes recorded-action and droplet steps (#489)
batch read only {"command", "params"} objects, so the [id, params] pairs a
recorded action or droplet stores failed with 'missing "command"'. It now
uses the engine's action parser (automate_cmds::parse_action, split out of
parse_script), which takes [id, params], objects and bare ids, bare or
wrapped in {"steps": ...} or a droplet; {"actions": ...} still works.

* CLI batch refuses an --out folder that is the --in folder (#492)
Results are saved as <out>/<stem>.<ext>, so --out naming the input folder
silently replaced the originals. batch now compares the canonical folders
(relative spellings, trailing separators, symbolic links) and fails before
writing anything, naming the folder; the new --in-place flag opts in.

Any `--flag` a subcommand didn't know was recorded and ignored, so
`batch --fromat jpg` wrote the source formats and exited 0, `run
--param '{…}'` turned the JSON into a stray file name, and
`<subcommand> --help` ran the subcommand (`mcp --help` started a
server). One table, `SUBCOMMANDS`, now lists each subcommand's value
flags, bare flags and handler, replacing the shared VALUE_FLAGS list:
an unknown flag in either form (`--flag value` or `--flag=value`) is a
usage error naming it (exit 2) before any work, a value on a bare flag
is an error, and `--help` or `-h` after a subcommand prints usage and
exits 0. Every documented flag keeps working in both forms.
The usage text now lists `--quality` for `run` and `batch`, which
already honoured it, and the book's CLI page describes the stricter
parsing.

`file.automate.batch`, `file.scripts.imageProcessor`,
`file.automate.lensCorrection`, droplets (which run batch) and
`photocraft-cli batch` named every output `<stem>.<ext>` in one folder.
When two inputs mapped to the same name (`a.png` and `a.jpg` saved as
JPEG, or the same file name in two input folders), the later save
replaced the earlier result while both were listed as written and the
run exited 0.
`engine::file_cmds::OutputClaims` remembers the outputs written in a
run, ignoring case as macOS and Windows file systems do. An input whose
output was already written is skipped before any work and reported in
`errors` (the CLI prints FAIL and exits non-zero); the first result is
kept. Runs whose names don't collide, including the same stem kept in
its own formats, are unchanged. The commands' params docs say so.

The headless server dispatched `jobs.list` and `jobs.cancel` but left
them out of `METHODS`, so a client discovering the server through
`methods` couldn't find the job methods `engine.execute {"wait": false}`
depends on. Add them, and name them in the rpc.rs module doc and the
`photocraft-cli serve` usage text. A test checks that the job methods
are listed and that every listed name is dispatched.

Rebased onto main (#58/#61/#63/#66/#70/#74) by the maintainers: automation
open/save return and surface import/export warnings (app.open/app.save
reply with `warnings`), automation opens route .abr/.grd to the preset
libraries with script events suppressed, interactive opens keep open_file's
path/recent/notice handling.

- rpc::respond (the JSON-lines server behind `photocraft-cli run`/TCP)
catches a panicking request and answers it with an error, and keeps
using a poisoned session lock (as the MCP server already does) instead
of failing every later call with "session lock poisoned". Regression
test poisoned_session_keeps_serving.
- MCP server: the eight bridge_client().expect("bridge") and the
headless_op(..).expect("headless") calls return a tool error instead.
- bridge: the connection is taken with let-else, not expect.
- automation and photocraft-cli deny unwrap/expect/panic/unimplemented/
todo/unreachable.

CI's `cargo fmt --all -- --check` has failed on every run because the
repo had no rustfmt config and was never formatted. Use the same settings
as EffectCraft/FilmCraft (max_width 160, use_small_heuristics Max), which
also keeps the churn small. Formatting only; no code changes.
