A layer keeps its own XMP packet (Layer::xmp), where scripts and embedding
apps store data about the layer under their own namespaces.
- PSD/PSB/layered TIFF: read from and written to shmd > cust > layerXMP
(UTF-16, NUL-terminated, after layerTime), laid out as Photoshop 2026
writes it; an unchanged Photoshop block round-trips byte for byte.
- .pcraft: optional `xmp` on each layer.
- layer.xmpMetadata {layer?, rawData?}: read, set (one undo step) or
remove with null; refuses malformed XML, DTDs, NUL and > 4 MiB.
- Duplicate Layer copies the packet; document.inspect reports hasXmp.

A shape layer's path is its vector mask in Photoshop (Properties > Masks),
with its own vector-mask density and feather. PhotoCraft's ShapeLayer had
neither, so soft shapes could not be made, and stroked soft shapes from PSDs
lost both on import.
- doc: ShapeLayer gains `density` (0..1, default 1) and `feather` (px,
default 0).
- vector: the shape renderer applies them to the fill as a soft vector mask
(fill shows beyond the path at 1 - density; the feather is the vector
mask's Gaussian), so the shape's own pixels, the GPU (which samples them)
and the stroke/fill split all follow. The stroke stays crisp. The feather
blur moves from compose::masks to vector::feather and both share it and the
feathered area, so a shape and an equal vector mask render the same pixels.
- compose: soft shapes' bounds reach their fill, their layer effects follow
the soft alpha, and the split cache key includes density and feather.
- engine: `layer.vectorMask.edit` on a shape layer sets density/feather in one
history step (path/enabled/linked/invert are refused there); density is now
validated (finite 0..100) instead of clamped. `layer.vectorMask.info`
reports a shape's values.
- ui: Properties shows the Vector Mask Density and Feather sliders for a
selected shape layer in both themes (live drag, one undo per gesture).
- .pcraft: manifest and convert carry both with serde defaults (older files
load at 100 % and 0 px).
- PSD: export writes them as the vector density/feather mask parameters;
import reads them into the shape (re-rendered, as the stored pixels lack the
fill beyond the path). Soft unstroked solid/gradient shapes now import as
shapes instead of fill layers with a vector mask; pattern-filled ones stay
fill layers.
Photoshop's 10 px feather on a 100 px black square, row 100, x = 30..72:
ours is within 1 level of every measured value (8, 16 and 32 bits);
density 50 % shows 127/128 beyond the path and 0 inside.

* fix(doc): variable definitions follow layer id remapping on copy and load
A duplicated document (image.duplicate, history.newDocument) or a .pcraft
loaded with remapped ids assigned fresh layer ids but cloned VariableDef.layer
unchanged, so datasets silently drove no layer (or, after remap, a colliding
one). Remap variable targets through the same id map as layer comps and
slices; a dangling target keeps a non-colliding placeholder. A merged-only
duplicate drops the whole variable binding set, matching how it drops comps.
Closes#4969

Drag out of the rulers' upper-left corner to move the zero point: cross hairs mark where it
lands, Shift snaps it to the ruler ticks and View > Snap To targets apply otherwise; dropping it
back on the corner cancels. Double-clicking the corner puts it back at the image's top-left.
The rulers then read 0 at the zero point (negative left of and above it) and the Info panel's
X/Y measure from it.
The zero point is a document field (`ruler_origin`, document pixels), saved in .pcraft with
`#[serde(default)]` so older files open at the top-left. It is set by two undoable engine
commands, `view.setRulerOrigin {x, y}` and `view.resetRulerOrigin`, so agents can drive it.
It is not written to PSD: the public PSD spec documents no resource for it.

* Type: type on a path, glyphs follow the curve (#4365)
Add TextShape::Path (path, start offset, flip). The text is laid out as one
point-text line and each glyph is placed rigidly on the flattened path by arc
length, turned to the tangent at its centre; glyphs past the end are hidden and
a degenerate path falls back to straight text. New commands type.attachToPath
(work path or shape layer subpath) and type.detachFromPath. TextShape is no
longer Copy. .pcraft round-trips the new variant.

* Format: check pattern sizes on load (#3478)
A .pcraft pattern's width/height came straight from the manifest, so a
1 KB file could declare a 65535x65535 pattern without tiles; painting it
allocated width*height*16 bytes (abort) and the engine's u32 size math
overflowed.
- format: reject patterns 0 px on a side (Corrupt) or above the PSD
reader's 30 000 px edge (LimitExceeded).
- doc: Pattern::pixel_count / is_paintable with MAX_PAINT_PIXELS (2^26,
a 1 GiB f32 RGBA working copy).
- compose/gpu: patterns too large to paint paint nothing instead of
allocating (Tile::new_in, pattern_rgba, PreparedPatterns, GPU plan).
- engine: brush.texturePattern refuses them; average_color uses u64 math
and a bounded corner.

* gpu: skip unpaintable patterns in the Bevel texture too
The Bevel & Emboss texture element uploaded the pattern through
pattern_rgba, which now returns no pixels for a pattern too large to
paint; filter it like the other GPU pattern lookups.

Opening a JPEG now estimates the quality it was saved at from its quantisation
tables (the Annex K tables of ITU-T T.81 scaled by the IJG quality curve; exact
for such tables, the closest fit otherwise). Opening a WebP records whether it
is lossless (VP8L) or lossy (VP8), and a lossy one's quality from its base
quantiser index. The settings live on the document (`Document::file_encoding`,
saved in .pcraft) and a save that asks for no quality writes the file back the
same way, as Photoshop's Save does: File › Save, Save As and Save a Copy start
there instead of the fixed codec defaults (quality 90, WebP always lossless).
An explicit quality still wins; new documents and other formats keep the
defaults. Hostile or truncated DQT/VP8 headers give no estimate, never a panic.

Saves store each distinct tile once (a solid fill shares one Arc<Tile>), but
the loader fetched, decompressed and charged max_total_bytes once per tile
reference and gave every coordinate its own copy. A solid canvas above
~65536² (8-bit) failed to reopen with "bundle expands beyond 17179869184
bytes", and smaller ones lost their sharing (a solid 30000² 32-bit document
went from about 1 MB to about 14 GB in memory).
The loader now keeps the decoded tiles of the current load by sample type and
content hash: each distinct tile is decoded, hash-checked and charged against
the budget once, and every further reference gets the same copy-on-write Arc.
The budget still bounds distinct decoded bytes; extra references cost a map
lookup and an Arc clone each, bounded by max_manifest_bytes.

* Keep Quick Mask's empty start and Select All apart (#2743)
Quick Mask stored "no selection" as an all-white mask, the same as Select
All. With Color Indicates Selected Areas that white was coloured over the
whole canvas, and leaving Quick Mask turned any all-white mask (a real
Select All too) into no selection.
The document now records that Quick Mask was entered with no selection.
The empty mask is white for Masked Areas and black for Selected Areas, so
neither shows colour; switching the option on an untouched empty mask
keeps it empty. On exit only that untouched white start becomes no
selection, so Select All survives the round trip. The flag is saved with
the document.

PNG tEXt/zTXt/iTXt entries (and TIFF ASCII tags) were dropped on open with a warning. The
document now keeps them in Metadata.text, the .pcraft manifest saves them (older files still
load), and PNG/TIFF saves write them back; Metadata: None and embed_metadata=false strip them,
and PSD/PSB and palette PNG exports warn that they are dropped. XMP in a tEXt or zTXt chunk is
read as XMP too.

The loader accepted a manifest tile at any i32 index. TileCoord::rect
multiplies the index by the tile size, so an index past ±2²³ loaded fine
and then panicked ("attempt to multiply with overflow", geom/src/lib.rs)
wherever the layer's bounds were asked for: the status bar, Properties,
edit.transform, the compositor. Release builds wrapped to a rectangle
unrelated to the tile.
Loading now refuses a tile whose rectangle doesn't fit in i32 on both edges
(indices -8388608 ..= 8388606) with FormatError::Corrupt, as it refuses a
duplicate tile. In-app editing can't produce such an index; only a damaged
or crafted manifest can.
The test moves a raster layer's tile to just past each end of the range and
to i32::MAX / i32::MIN (refused), and to the extreme valid indices (loaded,
bounds computed). Before the fix the out-of-range bundles loaded, and asking
the layer for its content bounds panicked at the multiply.

* Advanced Blending: knockout, blend as group, transparency shapes, masks hide effects (part of #215)
Blending Options > Advanced Blending now works end to end:
- doc: AdvancedBlending on every layer (knockout none/shallow/deep, blend
interior effects as group, blend clipped layers as group, transparency
shapes layer, layer/vector mask hides effects), saved in .pcraft.
- PSD and layered TIFF: knko, infx, clbl, tsly, lmgm, vmgm read into the
model and written back (in place, or added when not at the defaults);
the TIFF byte-order transcoder handles lmgm/vmgm as byte flags.
- CPU compositor (compose/src/advanced.rs): shallow and deep knockouts
(isolated groups and clipping groups stop a deep knockout), clipped
layers blended individually, effects over the whole layer when
Transparency Shapes is off, effects built from an unmasked copy when a
mask hides them, interior effects under fill opacity.
- GPU: documents using Advanced Blending fall back to the CPU compositor.
- engine: layer.layerStyle.blendingOptions takes channels, knockout and the
five switches; inspect reports them; Copy/Paste Layer Style carries them.
- UI: the Blending Options page laid out like Photoshop's (General,
Advanced Blending, Blend If with split sliders), translated.
psd-tools corpus oracle 229 -> 236 (seven knockout files now pass; floor
raised); other corpora and all round trips unchanged. Scorecard

* Bound layer-group nesting at import and Group Layers (stack-overflow guard)
Everything that walks the layer tree (Document::walk behind nearly every
command, the layers panel, PSD export, .pcraft save/load) recurses once per
level, but nothing bounded how deep a document could get: a PSD whose records
nest groups a few thousand deep (each level costs only a divider + folder
record pair) overflowed the stack in the importer's build recursion, in
apply_link_groups, and again in every consumer - an abort no panic hook or
fuzz run catches. The one cap that existed lived in the .pcraft save path
(MAX_GROUP_DEPTH = 100), so such a file even imported 'fine' and then bricked
saving.
- photocraft-doc now owns the limit (MAX_GROUP_DEPTH = 100, the value the
format crate already enforced) plus Document::max_group_depth(), an
iterative depth measure that cannot itself overflow.
- PSD/PSB import rejects files nested deeper than the cap with an actionable
Unsupported error, mirroring what the .pcraft loader already does; the
never-fail psd_to_document keeps working on such files by capping the
recursion and warning about the unimported remainder (this was the overflow).
- apply_link_groups (resource 1026) recurses over the same tree and is
bounded the same way.
- layer.groupLayers refuses to nest past the cap (checked inside the edit, so
a rejected call records no history step and leaves the document untouched).
* Enforce the group nesting cap in layer.moveTo and Artboard from Layers
Moving a group beside or into a deeply nested layer, or wrapping a deep
group in an artboard, could still build a tree deeper than MAX_GROUP_DEPTH.
A shared check_group_depth helper now rejects those edits with an error and
records no history step, like layer.groupLayers.

* Smart objects keep their four-corner (Distort / Perspective) placement
A smart object's placement was an affine transform, so a perspective
placement lost its fourth corner: a mockup PSD's distorted screen looked
right on open (Photoshop's cached pixels) but re-rendered as a
parallelogram after Edit Contents → Save.
- SmartObject gains `perspective`, the full projective map (source px →
document px); `transform` keeps its affine approximation
- Re-renders go through it (place_source_projective), as do moves,
canvas rotations and edit.transform, so Distort / Perspective now work
on smart objects instead of being refused
- PSD import reads the quad (nonAffineTransform / Trnf) and export writes
it back; .pcraft stores the field (absent for affine placements)
- Test: a distorted smart object survives Edit Contents → Save

* Smart objects: warp maps through a distorted placement; perspective round-trip tests
Warp handles and stored warps on a Distort / Perspective smart object go through its full

* PSD: reject a header with zero width or height (#519)
A 0xN header opened as an empty document and saved back as another
zero-sized PSD or .pcraft. Header::validate now requires at least 1x1
(the spec range starts at 1), and PSD export validates the header so a
zero-sized canvas is never written.

* .pcraft: documents with deeply nested groups load again (#517)
serde_json's 128-level recursion limit made bundles with 40 or more
nested groups unreadable after a successful save. The manifest is now
parsed with that limit disabled behind a linear JSON depth check, layers
are decoded and converted one level at a time with small stack frames,
and groups may nest up to MAX_GROUP_DEPTH (100) levels, which load and
save within a few hundred KiB of stack. Saving a deeper document fails
instead of writing a bundle that can't be opened.

* Export: convert non-sRGB RGB to sRGB for formats without a profile (#522)
GIF, BMP, QOI, TGA, ICO and Netpbm can't embed ICC, so a linear-light
or Display P3 document was written with values that only meant something
under the dropped profile (a linear EXR came out dark). export_flat now
converts such RGB to sRGB through photocraft-cms (perceptual, as Quick
Export does) for every photocraft_io::export route. The EXR/HDR linear
conversion shares the same banded helper.

* Export: composite transparency over white for formats without alpha (#521)
The CLI, MCP, Save As, Layers to Files and Layer > Export As dropped the
alpha channel when writing JPEG (or Radiance HDR), exposing the colours
stored under transparent pixels, while Export As and Quick Export
composite over white. export_flat now flattens over white too (no ink
for CMYK) and says so in its warnings.
